Earthquakes in the Mediterranean are a major threat to infrastructures and population. Italy, Greece, and Turkey accommodate most of the seismicity in the Mediterranean area, but until now the seismic risk is not homogeneously characterized, neither properly communicated to the citizens. The RISKMED OT MED funded project “ Natural risks in the Mediterranean: Hazard, vulnerability, perception and management” is responding to this challenge in an integrated way linking together natural and social sciences. The main partners within this project the CEREGE and ESPACE laboratories in Aix-en-Provence (France), which have strong connections with colleagues from ITU and Mugla University in Turkey, and INGV, Chieti-Pescara, OGS and Pisa Universities and research centers in Italy. The fellow post doctorate will be part of the OT Med Labex, an alliance of research institutions covering a wide range of expertise on natural hazards in the region of Marseille, thus offering excellent conditions for research and education.
We are seeking application from a highly motivated PhD awarded fellow in the field of seismic hazard and/or earthquake geology.
Expected tasks:
- Organisation and implementation of field surveys in Italy and Turkey in collaboration with local colleagues.
- Review and compile existing data, and acquire new data to better understand the frequency and dynamics of large earthquakes in Central Italy and western Turkey through surface observations and paleoseismological reconstruction over a range of different temporal and spatial scales.
- Convert all data into an open database.
- Analyze and interpret all data with respect to existing scaling laws and in terms of seismic hazard.
- Produce with social scientists engaged in the project (geographers and psychologists) comprehensible scientific information to public and territorial managers as the basis for recommended preparedness and mitigation actions.
- Participate to a participatory process and to focus groups concerning risk mitigation strategies (science communication, risk communication, public outreach) in targeted areas.
Desired skills/experience :
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in geosciences, geography or environmental sciences.
We seek for a proactive individual with a result-oriented attitude, able to work in an international and interdisciplinary team, with people of very diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
The candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills in english.
The candidate should have skills and/or experience in translating concepts and information into visuals.
Experience in one of those aspects is expected: GIS database, LiDAR data processing, active fault mapping and/or tectonic geomorphology.
Details and application procedure:
The duration of the contract is for 18 months, with a possible extension, depending on the initial results.
The post-doctorate will be based at CEREGE in Aix-en-Provence, France.
