The Mediterranean Basin benefits from a rich natural and cultural heritage with a very diverse and multifunctional landscape. However, this diversity hotspot is also a vulnerability hotspot, facing important socio-ecological challenges. Pressures from global change (climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, pollution, resource overexploitation …) have been recognized as particularly acute and pose risk for the development of this region and the well-being of the population.
My project investigates how ecosystem services – the benefits that humans obtain from nature – can contribute to a sustainable development dynamic of the Mediterranean societies. With support of scientific evidence, I aim at communicating the value of preserving functional ecosystems and at identifying the barriers, threats and opportunities to heading towards the sustainable development goals formulated by the United Nations.
