Topics: Modelling coastal acidification in an anthropized area: First assessment and scale variability
Application Deadline: May 30, 2017.
Location: Marseille, (MIO, http://www.mio.univ-amu.fr/?lang=en)
Duration: 18 months, starting on September 1st, 2017.
Employer: Aix-Marseille Université (“Laboratoire d’Excellence” Labex OT-Med, France).

This post-doc fellowship is integrated in the AMC project (Aix-Marseille Carbon Pilot Study) that is a first pilot study toward the implementation of a carbon observatory in the Aix- Marseille region. This study aims at setting up the first steps for monitoring the atmospheric CO2 dynamics of a coastal city in relation with regional CO2 sources and sinks. This multidisciplinary project aims at developing a synergy between CO2 modelling approaches and dedicated field work on the CO2 atmospheric, terrestrial and coastal components. The AMC project has been recently funded by “Laboratoire d’Excellence” Labex OT-Med (see: http://www.otmed.fr/) which includes 10 research laboratories and one research federation ECCOREV specialized in different fields: environmental sciences, law, economics and social sciences.

Detailed tasks: The required work of the post-doc student aims to highlight by a modelling approach, the impact of high-frequency (hours to several days vs. seasonal) fluctuations of physical coastal processes on carbon chemistry in the anthropized area of Marseilles Bay (France).

In details, the tasks of the post‐doc student will be firstly to code an advanced module of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and alkalinity dynamics taking into account a system of nonstationary carbonate kinetics in the water column. This module will be coupled with a 3D coupled physical and biogeochemical marine model (MARD3D/Eco3M-MassiliaP), the latter forced by an atmospheric CO2 model (WRF-CHEM).

With this tool, the post‐doc student will try to (1) disentangle the respective roles of hourly/daily variations and seasonal evolutions of air pCO2 on the marine carbonate chemistry (phasing and dynamics) through the study of different buffer factors (time evolutions, maps), (2) highlight the zones of Marseilles Bay where the carbonate system vary at high frequency and in which meteorological and anthropic conditions could have potential consequences on acidification at differential rates in this coastal area. The results of these modelling tasks will be published in international papers and presented during an international conference.

In addition, the postdoc will punctually participate to the collect of samples from the bi- monthly SOLEMIO sampling cruises for measurements performed at MIO with the colorimetric method, and the associated quality control.

Desired skills and experience: To be considered for this position, applicants should have a PhD. in Marine Sciences, obtained by September 1st, 2017. Applicants must have skills in coupled physical-biogeochemical modelling, marine chemistry and have experience in handling complex numerical codes and computational programming (e.g. Fortran90®), post- processing (e.g. Matlab®), UNIX/Linux and HPC systems, and data management (e.g., ability to deal with large datasets of diverse formats).
Knowledge on the Mediterranean marine specificities would be an advantage to obtain the position. Not required knowledge on French language.

Funding scheme: Recipient of the fellowship will receive a salary of about 2000€ per month (depending on the French administration rules and after payment for healthcare). In addition, support is available for travel expenses, equipment, and supplies.

Application procedure: Candidate should submit their application along with the usual supporting documents: motivation letter and CV (with contact details and personal data, degrees, language skills, computing skills, working experience and a list of degree projects/theses/publications) in pdf format.
